It depends on the location, the reason earthquakes occure is do to plate tectonics. Plate tectonics is a theory of geology that has been developed to explain the observed evidence for large scale motions of the Earth's lithosphere. Plate tectonics move quite slowly but there is a possibility that one of the plate may shift quickly and that is what causes an earth quake.
