Packaged potting soils may have a wide range of ingredients. Usually, peat moss, perlite and vermiculite, are mixed in proportion to provide proper drainage, aeration and moisture retention. Additional ingredients may include fertilizer, composted bark, coconut fiber, sand, composted manure, soil and water. Packaged potting mixes very widely in the performance. Choose carefully to suit the intended purpose or mix your own.

This is my own recipe:
5 parts peat moss
2 parts sifted composted poultry manure
1 part perlite
2- 4 tablespoons ground limestone (pH adjustment)
2 gallons diluted fish emulsion fertilizer

There are two main types of potting compost: John Innes, and multipurpose.

John Innes Seed Compost
2 parts by bulk medium loam (partially sterilised)
1 part by bulk peat
1 part by bulk sand

1060g superphosphate &
530g ground limestone or chalk to each cubic metre

John Innes Potting Compost (No.1)
7 parts by bulk medium loam (partially sterilised)
3 parts by bulk peat
2 parts by bulk sand

2835g John Innes Base &
530g ground chalk or limestone to each cubic metre

John Innes Base
2 parts by weight hoof and horn (13%N)
2 parts by weight superphosphate (18%P)
1 part by weight sulphate of potash (48%K)

John Innes 2 & 3
Double and triple the amount of fertiliser, respectively

Note the difference between John Innes Seed, and John Innes 1,2,and 3. This reflects the seed's requirement for greater aeration and for phosphates for root development. High levels of nitrogen often inhibit seed germination.

The John Innes 'programme' is thus sow into JISeed, prick-out into JI1, pot-on into JI2, and then pot the mature plant into JI3.

Loamless Potting Compost

3 parts by bulk, peat
1 part by bulk fine sand

to ea cubic metre:
355g ammonium nitrate
710g potassium nitrate
1420g superphosphate
2130g chalk
2130g magnesium limestone
355g Frit 253A
(a trace element mixture dissolved in ground glass)
