Alexander the Great *is* dead, and has been for a very long time.

*Was* he gay? Very likely, based on what we know of him and his relationship with Hephaestion.

It was not uncommon for men to be homosexuals during this time. This was part of their training to be a soldier usually starting around the age of seven. Homosexual behavior was suppose to help ease sexual desires and needs when the men had to be gone for long periods of time. Most of the soldiers went home to wives. They had their wives dress like boys so they could procreate. Hephaestion was Alexander's lifelong friend and probably gay lover.

Not any more, he isn't!

Hephaestion, of Macedonian nobility, was Alexander's closest friend and lover. A fellow warrior, his abilities as a commander weren't the best; however, he was also one of Alexander's closest advisors.

In Greece at that time there was no gay, straight or bi. Alexander the Great was married had female lovers but also had young male lovers as was the norm at the time. It is too difficult to define the way that they were in the 4th century with our current cultural definitions. We like to put people into a box where as they didn't then.

So goes the story. But, back in the day Roman men all had young boys along with their wives or lovers and no one thought anything about it. A lot of soldiers took young males into battle with them because they were gone for years at a time. It was just part of life back then.

Don't know, don't care, and it doesn't matter anyhow. He was still great. His friend Heave called him "Alexander the buff." 'Great' looks much better in history books, so it stuck. As "askbabbs" stated, homosexuality was accepted at the time. People did not freak out and froth at the mouth over differing sexual behaviors until Christianity took over.
