This is from research carried out by Bristol University.
Do you think this will have any effect on the chavs who insist it's their 'right' to smoke through pregnancy (and around the newborn) or will they carry on regardless.

Brian 777...A chav is a common person, usually living in a sink estate or highrise council flats, who smoke, swear, have many little bastards by different fathers and live off benefits

Interestingly enough, such women are frequently admitted to hospital as in-patients during pregnancy because of high blood pressure and research has shown that the babies have abnormally blood pressure during the first months of life, leading to possible hypertension later on. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=82921
There is an interesting correlation between prenatal smoking and the incidence of criminal behaviour on the part of the offspring, but of course, this might simply be a reflection of the general irresponsibility of the family concerned. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/content/NWS_1_1x_Violence_Linked_to_Prenatal_Smoking.asp
To answer your question: the only way in which one could stop such women would be to lock them up throughout the pregnancy and make sure that nobody smuggles in cigarettes. Which, as people will be only too quick to point out, would be against their human rights. The babies' human rights don't count, however.

when they get pregnant at 15, i'd imagine they'll carry on regardless... (i think the absence of meaningful intelligence is probably enough cause for them to listen to nothing apart from the unintelligible shrieks that seem to be their main form of communication)

sadly it wont change them, we heard of one who said that she needed an extra scan to see if baby is growing properly because of her condition - her condition being she smokes cannabis and drinks - sigh.

Children who are exposed to alcohol and smoke throughout pregnancy also have a higher risk of being statemented with a learning difficulty due to the damage it causes.

I'd say it should be made illegal to provide a pregnant person with these things
