Peptide/ amide bonds (C=0-NH-) have partial double bond character i.e. 40% C-OH=N-(imine). This results in a shorter bond length, and increased bond order. Ester bonds do not have this phenomenon of electron delocalisation over a few atoms, known as tautomerism. Since partial double bonds are stronger than single ester bonds, overall greater stability results in proteins. Enhanced rigidity also accounts for the secondary structures (in addition to H-bonding) of alpha-helix and beta-pleated sheet, in the Ramachandran plot of the conformations assumed by amide 'planes' in polypeptides! Therefore it is very important!
