I am traveling, with my 2 year old grandson, to Texas next week. Since I am travelling alone the less I have to carry the easier things will be. For this reason I was looking for a Wal-Mart in San Antonio so I could get his diapaers and wipes and such. That is when I discovered that there are at least 20 Wal-marts surrounding the city of San Antonio so now I need some help.

I will be arriving at the San Antonio International Airport and staying at the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites on Panam Expressway, about a mile and a half away from the Walters Street Entrance to Fort Sam Houston Army Post.

I am hoping that someone from the area will be able to tell me which Wal-Mart will be the easiest to get to between the Airport and the Hotel.

Thank you.

When I did my search on the Wal-Mart web site I saw the Jones Maltsberger Walmart and it did look like it would be the better choice because of it location between the airport and my hotel but when I clicked on the map link for that store and it said to call the store for directions, I knew that was not going to be the store for me. Having worked at Wal-mart as well as having to call other stores for customers to get directions, it has been my experience that, unless you get an exceptional person answering the phone, the person giving directions is going to assume you are coming from just across town, and not from another state. LOL. That was why I decided to post here to try and get some local input. Which I did. Thank you all, I leave on Tuesday and am looking forward to visiting San Antonio.

Welcome to San Antonio.

Unfortunately, there is no longer a Walmart or K-Mart directly on the path between the airport and your hotel. The closest is on Austin Hwy I have included the address and phone number below. Your best Choice, however, from that location would be to go to an grocery store. It would be closer and the cost difference might not be appreciable. You would find a nice store on Walzem East of I-35 (Panam Expwy) or Eisenhauer @ Austin Hwy East of I-35 there is a very nice HEB grocery store. (HEB is Texas largest grocery chain)

As far as your hotel location. I grew up in that area. It should be OK during the daytime, but be cautious at night, the crime rate is higher in that area than other parts of the city. Don't let that put you off... overall San Antonio is a beautiful and friendly city, but as with all cities, there are some areas where it is better to have your locks on at night.

Have a nice stay in San Antonio, be sure to see the Riverwalk.

EDIT: I will have to agree with Beatrice and ffperki et al that the Jones Maltsberger Walmart is closer to the Airport. I did, however, hesitate to recommend that location, as I as well as many others I know have had trouble trying to get to that location. The congestion in the area and the confusion in the roads make it a little tricky. Had she been staying near the Airport it would have been my recommendation. But as she was headed to the I-35/Fort Sam Houston area, I sent her to the areas where the roads were less congested, and easier to follow. Having grown up near where she is staying, that would be the Walmart I would have chosen since the Walzem Road store closed. JD

My friend US_DR_JD has given you a really good answer I would only add that there is also a Wal-mart at
8500 Jones Maltsberger Rd, San Antonio, TX. This is very close to the Airport. If you are going to use a rent car this is less than a mile from the Main entrance to the Air Port.

There is a Wal Mart right by the airport off 281 South by Jones Maltsberger. There is also a Target right next to it

Yup, the Wal-Mart on Jones-Maltsberger is the closest to the airport. The one on Austin Hwy would be out of your way.
