The FCC regulates radio frequency and assigns a specific frequency to a radio station based on what frequencies arent allready in use and the location, the radio station has a limit on how powerfull its transmission can be also, this is to prevent radio stations from broadcasting over another. Have you noticed how very spread out they are too, typically your strongest stations will be equally spread across the FM spectrum to make sure there is no crosstalk.

The radio stations are not assigned the different radio frequencies but rather the radio frequencies are assigned to different communication companies. The frequencies naturally exist and are regulated by governments.
In the United States, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) decides who is able to use which frequencies for which purposes, and it issues licenses to stations for specific frequencies.
When you listen to a radio station and the announcer says, "You are listening to 102.7 KIIS FM!," what the announcer means is that you are listening to a radio station broadcasting an FM radio signal at a frequency of 102.7 megahertz, with FCC-assigned call letters of KIIS. Megahertz means "millions of cycles per second," so "102.7 megahertz" means that the transmitter at the radio station is oscillating at a frequency of 102,700,000 cycles per second. Your FM (frequency modulated) radio can tune in to that specific frequency and give you clear reception of that station. All FM radio stations transmit in a band of frequencies between 88 megahertz and 108 megahertz. This band of the radio spectrum is used for no other purpose but FM radio broadcasts.

Because if they were all on the same frequency they would all be talking over each other. It is also important that stations geographically close to each other should be on VERY different frequencies.

If they weren't assigned different frequencies they would overlap and all play at the same time. This is the same with television too, the channels are on different frequencies.
