if you seriously introspect, the struggle to acieve something is much more meaningful and trhilling than the sense of accomplishment.

take the example of a journey to some place thrilling. The journey shall be much mmore thrilling than the reachng of destination, once you reach the destination, you suddenly feel that it is all over too soon, no matter how hard it all had been.

So achieving or not achieving is not the thing, making efforts to achieve is more important. if you could achieve then it is good, but even if you could not achieve, you also had your share of experience and thrill perhaps more than the one who actually achieved it.

This happened to me with accounting. I wanted to pursue the Certified Public Accounting exam and took many acounting courses to prepare myself for the exam. I had a baby and the time required of the baby made it impossible for me to direct myself to sustained applied study for the exam. I had to abandon the objective. I still achieved more pay in my job every time I completed an accounting course and to a certain extent I gained more knowlege which gives me more security as well. By trying I still achieved intrinsic rewards that I would not have had I not tried at all.
My current objective is to get a bridge built over the Rio Grand River to relieve traffic in my part of town. I am getting laughed at a lot these days by the powers that be. But my gut tells me that I will be doing the laughing if I hang tough for about ten years.

If you worry about succeeding every time you try something, you will never do anything hard. It is worth the effort. Maybe you don't completely achieve the goal this time but you can get help next time or encourage someone else to do it.

One of three things;
1.) The goal is simply unattainable, so you cannot achieve it. (A common occurrence.) A feeling of failure or mid-life crisis often results.
2.) You achieve it. But after the thrill of the achievement wears off you find yourself feeling empty; board even. (This is a common occurrence among young movie stars which is why they turn to drugs and alcohol.)
3.) You achieve it then go on to make the most of it. (Like Norm Abrams or Tim Allen.) Its your choice.

Perhaps the best way to approach this is by pretending you are on your death bed ready to die. Would you then say, "if only I could spend one more day at the office?". I don't think at that point I would care that I tried or didn't try.

I know that almost no one will remember what I've done in life after a few months.

If you don't achieve all the things you set out to achieve you start recognizing your limit, your humanity: it is the most important thing in life. From this point you can start having an authentic life.

Well, combine the two.

Make a series of smaller goals amount to the final goal. That way you aren't in an "All or nothing" situation. You can see progress and eventually obtain the ultimate chanllenge.

g-day!

I forgive myself and whatever it is that won't let me achieve my goals, I just "shrug it off and suck it in" and continue on my journey. Nobody is perfect but we all have to keep trying.

Then you've just given yourself a healthy reality check.

The point in living is to just go through the experience of living it.
