He would have been substantially more awesome if he had had the courage of his convictions. He postponed the publishing of his heliocentric theory until after he died. Of course this was probably smart, since the church had a tendency to burn people who had ideas contrary to the teachings of the church. Giordano Bruno discoverd that holding heretical (however accurate) ideas about the cosmos could prove fatal, being burned at the stake in 1600. Four hundred years later the church apologized.

All those great old scholars were awesome. How smart do you have to be to figure that kind of stuff out with none of our modern instruments. Copernicus did his work before the telescope was even invented.
