Life was pretty dangerous. Don't forget....if you waylaid a ship of the Crown you had the entire British Navy looking for you. Colonists ships were naturally protected or came under the protection of the Crown at the time (pre-Revolution) and raiding a merchant would net you a speedy trial in London and then hanging from the gibbet until your body decayed. A warning for others who would be so presumptious to steal from His Majesty.
You didn't have much of a life and of course every port you put into (that would accept you) you may lose a few crewman who decided they'd had enough.
You also ran the risk of crewman being disgruntled because they may have felt they didn't receive thei fair cut of any loot and you'd find yourself in irons before the days end.
However piracy was a very democratic form of government on board ship. The crew was actually the ones who voted and kept you in control as Captain. Start sailing around and coming up empty handed and the crew would cast you aside for a much more aggressive leader.

It was a two year career at most. From start to finish Edward Teach's (Blackbeard) career as a pirate lasted only two years. Most people who turned pirate were caught in much less time.

A pirate was a rapist, murderer, traitor, and thief. There was nothing romantic about being a pirate, and it was a deadly lifestyle that most ended up regretting.
