When convenient, many people in Asia defecate near water, and splash themselves until washed clean...
When inconvenient, a small bowl or cup, of water, in some places called a 'charpy', is used to perform cleansing in a similar fashion...sort of a portable bidet!
This requires preparation, prior to nature calling...

the same things some people use today such as leaves, grass, water out of a canteen. the custom of washing ones anus is long established and in muslim countries it must be done with the left hand since the right hand is used to eat with, the left being unclean. those who have lost the left hand are in deep dodo. pun intended.

If you travel the middle east, it disgusts them to see someone use their left hand for eating. Frankly it disgusts me that it would disgust them but they have thier reasons as one previous answer suggested. That is one reason that cutting off the right hand is considered a very serious punishment. Yuk
