Exorcist definately is not. It is based on a book by William Peter Blatty. The Amityville Horror is up for debate. There is a family who wrote a book on which the movie is based. They claim that everything is true, but not very many people believe them. There are numerous websites telling the many discrepencies in their story

George and Kathy Lutz who purchased the house in Amityville claimed that their dream home was haunted.
But, it was never proven.
Hollywood, the books, and diffrent opinions and stories through the years have made the Amityville house as popular as some of the famous horror icons such as JAWS, Jason, Freddy and Michael Myers.
People enjoy a good ghost story, and The Amityville Horror has been the story that has captured the interest of people since the 1970's.
I don't think the Exorcist is a true story.
I saw a documentary on 20/20 a fews years back.
The writer claimes that a boy in Africa was his reason for the writing of the book.
The boy was supposedly possessed by spirits.
The writer, with other people interested in the so called demon possession created a story that scared readers and audiences around the world.

Amityville was just a legend. You know something small happened and people kept adding to it everytime they told the story. There is actually a couple living in the Amityville house. But they did take out the windows that looked like the eyes. Don't know about the exorcist

The Amityville Horror house actually exists...in Amityville, NY. The original is supposedly based upon true events that took place at the house. Of course Hollywood took "creative lisence" with the story in the movie.
I don't think the Exorcist is based on any factual event.

Amityville is based on a supposedly true story, but was blown out of proportion by the film makers. Years later the family did admit they made the whole thing up to make money.
The Exorcist is also based on a supposedly true story, but I believe the 'real' child was a boy, and the possession was not quite as dramatic as the movie made it out to be.
Info on the actual case: "The true story began in January 1949 and involved a 13-year-old boy named Robbie who lived with his parents and grandmother in Mt. Rainier, Maryland. Robbie was very close to his aunt who visited the family frequently from St. Louis, Missouri. She was a medium and attempted to communicate with the spirit world. Not only did she spark Robbie’s interest in this practice, she also taught him how to use the Ouija board."

The Lutz family bought the house in question (a murder house, that is, a house where a murder took place ) and apparently heard some weird noises and came up with the story in the film. They later admitted it was mostly fiction.
William Peter Blatty wrote his novel "The Exorcist" based on the memoirs of a retired Jesuit priest. The memoirs were titled "Satan Begone!" and were the stories of the Vatican's real-life exorcist.
I remember reading excerps from the original book (at a Jesuit high school near Chicago) and thinking "What a great idea for a movie!"

amityville Horror is based on a true story but they exaggerated a lot of the things that happened in this movie. exorcists still happen today i don't really know if they are true or not but i wouldn't doubt it.
