I am replacing all my outlets to a new color and i am having a problem. I have installed many new outlets, mostly just by taking the old one out, and putting the wires where the were on the old one and put them on the new one. I have ran into a problem though with one of my outets however. The outlet is connected to a wall switch so that you can turn the light on with the switch through the outlet. There are 3 wires, Black, White, and Yellow. I hooked it up the exact way that the older one was hooked up. Black on the hot wire side, White on opposite side, and the Yellow on the other vacant screw on the hot side. This works with the old outlet, but not with the new outlet. It gets power with the new outlet, but the switch does not control it. Do i need to get a special kind of outlet, or am i hooking it up wrong?

Turn your switch to the side so that the two screws are showing and wires going into each. Usually, this is the side BLACK wire goes into.

NOTICE, there is a metral strip going across from one screw to the next right at the screw. It looks like a tab. Grab this tab with a pair of needle nose and rock it back and forth to break it.

I am assuming that only one plug of the two was controlled from your switch and the other was powered all the time. If this is the case all you need to do is shut off the power remove the tab between the 2 screws where the wires hook on ( black and yellow) it will break off when you wiggle it back and forth. this should solve your problem.
Good luck

Check your old outlet and see if the jumper tab is missing. If it is then the switch controlled one of the outlets. If not then the switch controlled something else? I thought you said it controlled a light? If so the tab should not be broken unless it is a cord plugged lamp or light.

I am going to assume it is for the kitchen sink light and you do not want to break the tabs. Unless like I said, If it is a cord plugged light then break the tab on the hot side only.

Just reread your question. Break the tab LOL.

There is a removable tab of metal between the two screws where the black and yellow are connected. Remove that tab on that side only. It breaks off with a pliers, just wiggle it back and forth. Don't break the tab off on the white wire side.

Below is Ace Hardware, maybe it help. IF, you not getting power to the last Receptacle (Bathroom) that not where the problem is, it will be the Previous receptacle where those wires come from. Many times people Strip the wire and stick them in the Holes on the back of the receptacles and not use the screws. If, the wire not plugged in good, you lose power to the next receptacle. So, you look for the last working plug-in and check the wires there to see if they tight and connected. It helps to have a Volt Meter and Power off when you work with the wires. Sometimes, the Bathroom may get it's power from the room on the other side of the wall!!! Hope you understand.

On the side of the new outlet, there is a brass colored tab that connects the top to the bottom.
On the side with the brass colored screws, break it off and connect wires as usual.
