49 (no Hawaii yet), and I have never flown. All of it was on family road trips. Most recent was Alaska, this summer. I think I've slept at least one night in every state except Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi (not sure), and Rhode Island. For Idaho, it was always just on the way to somewhere else. For Mississippi, same thing. For the ones on the east coast, they were too close to home in New York, so we never traveled all day to end the day there. We did, however, spend significant amounts of time in all 49, whether it was to take in the sights, have some good food, things like that. Every one of them was an enjoyable experience, and there's not one that I wouldn't like to visit again someday.

Tip for the ones who've seen almost none of the US, but have been all over, say, Europe...get a look at your own backyard someday, there's so much that you're missing.

I've been in 41 states. I've not been to Alaska (outside of an airport), Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Utah was the state that surprised me the most - just amazing beauty! Nebraska is the state I would most likely not visit again.

All but Alaska, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.

So, I've had a meaningful experience in 46 states - a local-cuisine meal at a good local restaurant, a visit to an historic or natural wonder site, and/or business interactions (I mean real business, not just buying gas).

ALL the states EXCEPT for Alaska and Hawaii ... but of course, that is because I was on Active Duty with the US Military. Now that I am a Military Retiree (and I've been overseas too) ... I am doing more Travelling (and I am FINALLY an Empty-Nesting Single Retiree as well) ... so I MAY just visit Alaska and Hawaii in the coming years!

Hmmmmmm, offhand I would say about 15 of them.

Addition: Let's see if I was close. Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Vermont, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia & West Virginia.

17 -- missed it by 2!
