I'm an SF fan and I've really had some good times with Lois McMaster Bujold - Vorkosigan series and Chalion; David Weber - the Fury dualogy; or Dean Koontz - the Odd Thomas series.
Historical Fiction
Books by John Jakes particulalry the Kent Family Chronicles.
Books by John Clavell. Shogun and Tai-pan in particular
Non-Fiction
The Wild Swans by Jung Chang is a surprisingly good read, too. Its an autobiography but it reads fairly fast and it is interesting. It answered a lot of questions for me on why such a huge nation had chosen communism.
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.

Body of Evidence Series by Christopher Golden
I have read Throat Culture. It is a good book, but some parts are hard to understand.

I had a really good time reading both "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff Christ's Childhood Pal" and "Blood Sucking Fiends" both by Christopher Moore.

For a fun mystery series with zany plots, read the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. It starts with "One for the Money" through "Lean Mean Thirteen". It's a fabulous series.
