Ok so in the stage version of fiddler on the roof there is an optional part of "the fiddler" who is a silent part who has no words or has no part of singing in anything.... just little danceing. Now this question is mainly for those of you who are in theatre..... Seeing as how this is a high school production and the music will be done in Orc-extra... Now seeing as how the part of the fiddler is "optional" that would have to mean that the part of the fiddle playing is in the orc-extra... So since the fiddle is allready playing in the music the character of the fiddler wouldn't actually have to play the fiddle would he? he would only have to appear to play it...... right????

OMG PEOPLE!!! ORC EXTRA IS A COMPUTERIZED PROGRAM THAT IS SENT WITH THE PLAYS SCRIPTS AND ROYALTYS!!!!! hello apparently its not used that often? we have used it for the past 5 years that i have been doing musicals and i believe before then too...... orc-extra is music that is ran during the play on a laptop computer that controls temp, vamps, and what plays when... its a lot easier than using actual people playing the music.....

Yes...though if you do have a decent violinist who can actually PLAY the part, it's much more effective.
Good luck with it...that's my favorite play of all time.

I have never seen Fiddler on the Roof without an actor on the roof playing his instrument. He may not actually be playing the music, but he's up there doing his thing not to mention at the end when Tevye is leaving Anatevka he does a bit of a dance with Tevye. It's iconic to say the least. Also, even though the Fiddler doesn't sing in that particular role, the Fiddler can double as an ensemble member a bottle dancer, any number of things so it's best if he is able to sing and dance. *Make sure you have a stage hand or two spotting the ladder, stairs, or means by which the fiddler is to reach the roof. It's often dark and many times fairly unsafe as it is.
and it's orchestra. Sorry, but I'm a bit picky about that.
I hope your director makes the right decision and has the Fiddler on the roof... but it needs to be done in a safe manner.

In most cases the Fiddler is not actually a fiddler.
In a live production with a Pit Orchestra it is usually difficult to synch the onstage player with the Pit. In pre-recorded playback it is damn near impossible. The actor portraying the Fiddler usually mimes playing.
Far from being "optional", the Fiddler is an integral part of the show. 20 or so years ago, I did a production with a man named Dan Slott who was a superb Fiddler. Without speaking a word, he conveyed the pathos and the joy that is the essence of the show.
He "played" a fiddle-shaped hunk of plywood.

Yes. In most productions, the fiddler just syncs his motions to the orc-extra fiddler, who is actually playing.

Can I just ask....what the hell is an orc-extra?
I don't remember any Orcs in "Fiddler On The Roof" so why would you need an extra to play one??

The person playing the fiddler can fake the playing. However, he should have a fiddle/violin & a bow to make it look more real.

yes he would only have to appear to be playing the violin. Though I have never heard of the term Orc-Extra before. Neat Idea. I wonder if that is why we got an accompaniment CD with HSM as well as the vocal guide.

I've seen it done both ways... the fiddler pretending to play while the orchestra's violin actually plays it, or the fiddler actually playing it on stage. Both can be effective.

If the fiddler's violin solo is being played by the orchestra, then the person playing the fiddler himself would not have to play the violin, he would just have to mime playing it in time to the music.

The person portraying the fiddler does not have to play the fiddle...correct...but if if you're doing the solo part for the play...please please please do the play justice and have the person study the part so he can appear to know what he's doing. Very powerful part.
