I am of the feeling this entire situation was a power-play within the organization....an old guard who used an ill George Steinbrenner in some means to put the story out there to try and thwart the two sons from taking control of the club.
The Boss was so ill a few months ago as to not be very responsive to visiting friends at his home and now - all of a sudden - he re-emerges to sound like the 1970s owner? And the 1970s (1980s and 1990s) Steinbrenner would not have simply given the story to one reporter over the phone; rather, this would have been a major press conference at the stadium.
Remember, control of the franchise and Thoroughbred interests was slated to go his son-in-law, until he was kicked out of the family earlier in the year due to a DUI charge, some poor attempts at business power-plays in the horse-racing industry and his wife (Steinbrenner's daughter) filing for divorce.
Once the sons gain control this week, I predict Torre will be given a contract to manage the club for at least three years.

Its not about what hes done in the past 12 years. Ownership probably feel, with the team they have, they could make the playoffs with a magic eightball running things.
I think the problem is how they have lost in the playoffs in the last few years; Mostly first round exits and proving to be less than competitive in those series. If those World Series championships and appearances were staggered over the 12 years, then he would be a lock for continueing his managerial duties. But its about the possibility that he may have lost something because thats what the record is evidence of. BUt we all know its because they keep investing in crappy pitching.
I think, with the young promising pitching they have coming up, they'll have a better playoff run no matter whos running the team.

I think Torre should quit and tell "the boss" to go scratch. But he is a gentleman who loves his players and the team. Each year, for the past 4 - we keep hearing about Torre possibly being let go. And that is all orchestrated by Steinbrenners PR team - to take the blame away from the players, Cashman and his poor, outrageous decisions. Yankees haven't won a ring in over 7 years now - and have been embarrassed a few times - while wasting billions to not win that ring, yet we keep hearing about the "dynasty" of the Yankees. Sure, they have the most Championships in the history - but for all that money and top brass positions - they have resulted in the same as 31 other teams each year - no ring. Plus who the hell could do a better job than Torre? Lou Pinelli perhaps - but even he as a great coach cannot hold the jockstrap to Torre. The dark horse is most likely Girardi, considering his accomplishments last year with a total team salary of 2 Yankee players - and a fan base that rivals a womens soccer team. (no disrespect to womens soccer) And to the Yankee cryass fans - Torre is the best thing since sliced bread for you idiots. Since Steinbrenner bought the team - how many rings do you have? Then tell me who was the manager for the majority. If you think Torre is the reason Rivera has a shot arm, or Abreau is batting .235, or the starting rotation of Seton Hall is better you are fools. You have a phenominal offense - and horrible pitching rotation, middle relievers and closer who is over the hill. That is why you share the basement in the AL East and will continue to. Plus the Yankees got away from their winning formula of building from within the farm system to give millions to aging players or 1 off contracts in desperation. You reap what you sow... And Michael - your comparison is inane. If a company has an owner or CEO who calls all the shots - he takes the fall, but will conveniently fire anyone they choose to fire, due to the lack of integrity and poor self esteem. Steinbrenner cannot have it both ways. HE chose to get rid of Sheffield and put all his support publically on Abraeu, just 1 fine example of piss poor ownership. Cody - Its Brian Cashman and he doesnt call the shots - he negotiates what the Boss tells him to do, like a good minion, hence his contract extension last year. And I could buy any player with an unlimited bank account.

There are really two answers to this question. Taking a look at it from an organizational stand point maybe they should fire Joe Torre, more then 10 years for a manger is long. Players start getting comfortable and thinking that they are safe no matter what. But shaking up the club in the off season not during the season might be good for the club. The other answer from a fan base is that it is not a good idea, he is a fan favorite and is well liked. I think if they fire him fans will be hurt. But they could let him go on his own terms which i expect to happen because after he lost in the ALDS he refered to the team as "the team" and no "we" as he uslally did.

Firing Joe Torre is a uniquely Yankees thing. George Steinbrenner has always done things like that in his fanatical need to win. While I admire his never ending quest to win the World Series, he sometimes does things that would be unthinkable to almost any other franchise, except, maybe the Red Sox. I, being a Phillies fan, would love my home team to have an owner that spared nothing to win. Firing Torre makes no sense to anyone but George, or maybe it is his son's decision at this point. George has been conspicuously absent recently. I think his health is failing and his sons are just perpetuating his style of ownership. If they don't go all the way for a couple of years they have a sybollic beheading to show the faithful that they are trying everything, no matter whether or not it is a popular decision. In my opinion, Joe Torre has done nothing to deserve his ouster. On the other hand, I think Joe is probably tired of dealing with that kind of pressure and wouldn't mind being fired at all. He'll probably just sit back and wait for another good offer and if none comes, I think he'll be O.K. with it.

No... he should have one more year. That might light the fire under the Yanks.
I would let A-Rod go, that would also light the fire under the rest to really perform. Each starter is an all star... but they can't get their act together. Those 2 things oughtta make them want it.

Because dumb a$s Yankee fans think that just because they spend money like no tomorrow on washed up way past their prime free agents they deserve a World Series Championship every year.
I am sick of hearing people say that just because he spends the money he deserves a winner. Life isnt that easy.
If you spend the money at least do it intellegently.

I don't understand the logic in firing him. Maybe the Yankees are sick of going to the playoffs. The only reason to fire him would be for the sake of change. I just don't believe in change for the sake of change. Who are they gonna get? Tony Larussa? That's more of a lateral move than an improvement.

I don't think they will. The Boss will probably rebuff, especially if they want Rivera and Posada back--both of them want Torre back and if he isn't in pinstripes next year, they won't be either.
