Yes, I always help this particular elderly lady when I was a kid. It actually took her several hours to walk ( she took very tiny paces- she had some health condition) a very short distance to a shop from her flat, she would always pass by my home. It was actually a 5 minute walk from her place to the shop.
I would help her carry her bag she was very , very stubborn but got use to me saying hello and walking with her. Until one day she finally accepted resting on a chair and have a cup of tea in my home while I did her shopping for her. She also opened up about lost contact with a family member and I got her in touch with them so she had family to help her at last as she lived alone. That was good really as I had to move to a new location weeks after, new home.

If she doesn't want to cross it's not helping her. Or do u mean she wants to cross but refuses help? In that case, I'd patiently walk beside her 'til she's safely across.
