I suggest a full length one, it is a ball after all, here are some nice ones:

Full length. It doesn't have to be a traditional ballgown with netting underneath but in my experience full length is always a winner at this type of event.
Nothing worse than being 'under dressed' at a formal function!

Full length elegance always. It is a ball. There are not many occassions when we can glam up so beautifully so take advantage. The choice of desses at this time of year are second to none . Go for it and enjoy.

Thank you for your pity. I also feel sorry for you for lacking the imagination to think of anything better to ask than such a mind numbingly boring question such as this. However, I shall answer it to the best of my abilities (something you forget to do on my question hence me reporting you for a violation).
Wear full length. Add a bag over your head and you'll instantly increase your chances 100%.

I would go with a full length gown. Maybe not a traditional ball gown, but something full length and still comfortable.
