My cousins little boy is called Jay but he is about 3/4 years old and I have only seen him a couple of times. Do you think it would be ok if i name my little boy Jayden? I dont plan on shortening it to Jay. Or do you think its too similar and I should choose something different even though I don't see him much?

i think Jayden has become too popular. You will end up calling him jay or jay jay. Go with something else.

Since you don't plan on calling him Jay regardless, a simple solution would be to use the proper Jadon spelling and side-step the similarity entirely.
Also, Jadon (Jayden/Jaden, etc.), Jason, James and others that often use the shortening Jay are so incredibly common right now, I don't think it's one you have to worry about "stealing" (or appearing to). After all, it's fairly safe to assume your cousin's little "Jay" will already have at least one other of the above in his class -- likely more, and possibly of either gender -- that I think it would be odd of his mother to feel slighted that you should also choose a common name, know what I mean? Pretty much the definition of popular, so she couldn't exactly be surprised to hear someone else use it. ;)

Name you baby what you want. It's a small world and there are many people out there who will have the same name Including relatives.

If its not a close relative I don't see the problem - its not like he's your sister little boy, and the name is different anyway. You can worry too much about things like this, I crossed so many names off my list because there was a relative with the same one. And then I thought sod it and picked the name I liked the best.

I`d call him any name I wanted, regardless of others, but I bet you a pound to a penny he WILL be called Jay. The British shorten anything, just look at some of the answers!

I'm sure it would be ok to call your son Jayden - especially if you are not going to be calling him Jay.

I would mention your wishes to your cousin first, so at least she has the chance to object if she feels very strongly about it, if you don't want a rift in the family that is, sillier things have happened. Other than that, I would say it's a great name for your son.

If you think Jayden is a bit to close to Jay - why not change the first letter? Hayden, Kayden, or Zayden all sound nice. :-)

I dont think Jayden would be bad,but give him a second name like Dawid and he can always shorten it to JD later on if it does get confusing.
Just let your cousin know before you name him...
