The building was originally referred to variously as the "President's Palace," "Presidential Mansion," or "President's House."[5] There is a common misconception that the term "The White House" wasn't used until after the War of 1812, when the mansion was burned and re-painted. However, the earliest evidence of the public calling it the "White House" was recorded in 1811, three years before the House was set on fire.[6] The name "Executive Mansion" was used in official contexts until President Theodore Roosevelt established the formal name by having the de facto name "White House–Washington" engraved on the stationery in 1901.[7] The current letterhead wording and arrangement "The White House" with the word "Washington" centered beneath goes back to the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The White House used to be called the President's Mansion until is was burned down by the British in the War of 1812. After that they rebuilt it, painted it White and was given the name White House.

Lot of people out there are crappy with history. During the war of 1812 (not the civil war) The British occupied Washington DC, this was right after the famous battle at Fort McHenry that Francis Scott Key wrote a little song about that became the National Anthem. So the British occupied Washington DC, and they set about to burn it down, this was retaliation for the US burning down the Canadian capital in York. During the destruction of DC a hurricane rolled ashore, the heavy rains put out most of the fires, then a fluke tornado popped up and wiped out many British troops. Needless to say, the Brits took this as a bad sign and left the city.
The White house before the fire was a gray color and was called the executive mansion, the fire discolored the exterior but did little structural damage. During the rebuilding of the executive mansion, it was painted white to hid the discoloration, and soon reporters stated to refer to it as the whire house.

The White House is not 'painted white' it is made of white stonework. As far as your theory of people calling it the white house because all the presidents were white does not make sense. No one called themselves 'white' hundred years ago, they called themselves Caucasian and blacks were called ****** or some derogatory name.

White and Black race references became popular in the 1960's.

It doesn't make you think at all. It's called The White House because it is white.

No, it's called the White House because that's the color of the house, not the presidents.

Try to get an education concerning this.

That's cute, but not the real reason for the name.

I'd hate for the White House to cause a further polarization of the populace, based on the simple name/color. Makes you think before you speak, doesn't it?

Here is your answer...and yes, you had a great point there...some people just answered as if you were stupid...but seems like you had a good point! Here goes:

As an American, you can be proud that The White House has been the seat of power to two centuries worth of the aforementioned geniuses, each of whom succeeded brilliantly at leading this great nation by appealing to the most moral, honest, and fiscally comfortable white people of their times.

Let us not forget the words of the immortal conservationist Teddy Roosevelt: "I shall call this place in all truth 'The White House,' lest it otherwise be called 'The Inferior Primitive ******* Savage House,' which was certainly not our Forefathers' intention."

Hello duhhhhhhhh.. It is painted all white...thus the reason for "The White House" has nothing to do with what color the president is.. Don't start false trouble with bull crap.
