Going out of his way on the lapel pin issue to antagonize voters is something that a politician simply dos not do. His political suicide does clear the way for a Clinton land slide. Why did he do it? Obviously he traded VP spot which might have gone to Edwards in return for which he locks in on VP. Is the greatest threat to the Republicans the fact that the Democrats are learning how to play this game.

He has been saying and doing stupid things since the campaign began and so has his wife (remember when she said their daughters won't hop into bed in the morning with them because Obama is "stinky and smelly").

If he didn't want to wear a pin - then don't do it. Just don't speak out AGAINST it. That is the political way of doing things. I don't like him BUT - he is not like Hillary Clinton and I do admire that. She would/will/does wear a pin when she thinks it will help and if polls tell her to take it off for a week she will. She wants to be everything to everybody and that is scary.

I am trying to understand your position. First of all, the current base of the Democratic party consists in large part to virulent left-wing extremists who hate to see anyone wear an American flag. Since acquiring the Democratic party nomination is not possible without their votes, it seems to me the lapel pin issue can only ingratiate him with the Democrat base. Hardly political suicide. It would be political suicide if this were the general election coming up but it is not.

I doubt that Obama can hope to see a VP spot on Hillary's ticket. Any voters who might be ticklish about a woman being President would probably run from her if a minority is "only a heartbeat away from the presidency". It seems Obama would add the spector of alienating racist voters to a ticket already alienating sexist voters. There are a lot of very old school, senior citizen voters in the Democratic party and they always vote. We are at least a decade away from them no longer being a factor.

The only chance Hillary has with them is if she has an acceptable VP on the ticket who makes them feel more comfortable with the idea of a female president.

He did not do it on purpose. This is his first election where he has had competition. In his senate bid is opponent dropped out after a sex scandal. Now he is having to run in a real race and showing he is still green.

The flag pin is no big deal. Saying he will attack into Pakistan is a big deal. Blasting Clinton for voting to label Iran's Revolutionary Guards as terrorist, then it turns out he skipped the vote on that is a big deal. If it was such a big deal then why did he not vote no on it?

Clinton is a great campaigner and she will not make any missteps. Obama has been fumbling around and the polls show it.

You know I don't see what the problem is of a person that will not wear a piece of jewlery that is likely made in China to show his patriotism for America. I also noticed that the people that criticize him for not wearing it (Billo, Sean Hannity) also don't wear flag lapels. As for the people that condemn Obama on this board for not wearing the flag lapel. Do you?

McCain, Romney, Brownback and many of the other Republican candidates don't wear pins or don't always wear them. You wouldn't say they have committed "political suicide," or that they are not patriots or that they have already settled on a VP spot. The simpliest explanation is always the best, these candidates show their patriotism in other, more significant ways.

To an extent, I can see his point. I feel that way whenever I see one of those magic magnetic yellow ribbons papering autos that cut me off or idle in front of handicapped parking slots with their emergency lights blinking.

To be a "patriot," one needn't adorn oneself with images, and I think his point is well-made.

On the other hand, I don't see Obama as a real contender, anyway; similar to the way I see Edwards. I think they want to get their skins toughened for future races.

One man's version of "political suicide" is another woman's "Hallelujah, bless you, THANK you for finally saying out loud exactly what I've been feeling for a lonnnnnnng time."

His answer to the question was absolutely genuine, honest and (to my mind) an astute crystalizaton of the opinions of a majority of Americans.

If you are thinking that wearing or not waring a piece of jewelry is political suicide, you are way out in the far 'right' field.

I would never vote for him anyway. I'm a socialist and do not vote for big business' liberal and conservative flacks.

However, I am astonished that his not wearing the USA, Inc. corporate logo on his lapel actually means that much to anyone.
