Martin Luther was an Augustinian monk who broke away from the Catholic Church because of abuses by the Church and other disagreements . He posted his 95 Theses at the Brandenberg Church on October 31,1517 and began the Protestant Reformation.

He practically founded Protestantism, at least he inspired the Protestant Reformation. He broke from the Vatican alright. You know those born-again Christians? Well, their origins stems from the Protestant Movement in that, at the time, Rome forbade the reading of the Bible by non-sectarians much less the studying of it. It was a privilege reserved for the monks or priests.

I would recommend a short and very good book by Roland Bainton (available in paperback). The title is HERE IS STAND and it is a biography of Luther./
