356 BC-323 BC Alexander was an ancient Greek King of Macedon. He was undefeated in all his battles; he had conquered most of the world. He had conquered the Persian Empire, including Anatolia, Syria, Phoenicia, Judea, Gaza, Egypt, Bactria and Mesopotamia and extended the boundaries of his own empire as far as the borders of Punjab. He also had founded the great city of Alexandria.

No one, and I mean NONE, achieved what Alexander did with the resources of a relatively small country. His army of ~40 to 50,000 men took on the huge Persian empire and subjugated it entirely in just a few years of campaigning. The sheer logistics involved in maintaining an army over the marching distances involved is amazing enough.
Julius Caesar admired Alexander and wept because he felt he was not as great.
Alexander's achievements in warfare would be unmatched for a thousand years until the Arab conquests under the banner of Islam in the latter 600s CE.
Just as Alexander spread Greek culture throughout the Middle east, Egypt, and even to present day Pakistan,
the Arabs would spread Islam throughout North Africa, the Middle east, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
Greek culture spread by Alexander profoundly affected Christianity. Many early Christian scriptures were written in Greek.

When Alexander came to the throne, his realm included Macedonia and Greece. By the time of his death, he not only ruled Greece, but also an area that includes modern-day Egypt, Iran (Persia), Iraq (Babylon), Israel, Lebanon (Phoenicia), Syria, Turkey (Asia Minor), and parts of India.
