No. I would never use "retarded" as an insult... i probably wouldn't use it at all unless i knew the people around me would not be offended by it.
Everyone has feelings, just some people are ignorant and afraid of what they don't understand.

Im quite normal but I have the use of only one leg, one eye, and one ear.
I long ago accepted the stupidity of people, even those who mean well sometimes insult without even knowing it. I have never made any comment to anyone with a handicap, and that includes kids with learning problems.
Walk a mile in another persons shoes before judging them. Some people stare and sometimes I will walk up and ask them why they are staring and stare into their eyes. Some people ask me if I get a lot of money, and point, which is a really stupid person.
Sometimes if they talk loud or act like I am stupid, I will deliberately act all spastic and start shaking and acting like a fool and knock things over in a store if the clerk was stupid to me. Once I went through k-mart in an electric wheel chair and knocked down a bunch of stuff
and the guards and clerks were all hey--can I help you, can i help you--and I said no, Im doing quite well thank you. And they got mad and said, sir, you will have to leave so I stayed another 20 minutes. They stopped acting like Im an idiot after that. I have since become friends with the dudes chasing me and kid them about it every time i go in there.
I love it to go to the doctor and the girl checks me in and says, have a seat. hee hee and I say, i already have since Im in a wheelchair. It just shows that she is used to a routine, not necessarily
being mean so I don't mind.

When I was young my ex and I would make up names for people but not say them in front of them or anyone else.
We worked together and our first boss we named "crip" because he limped. Another was a woman boss we called "bat woman, she was always running like chicken with it's head cut off wearing a lab coat that looked like a cape when she ran.
We always made up names for people even each other he called me wolf because it rhymed with wife, I called him Ben because is was short for husband.
I haven't used the term retarded as an insult, I have described someone that way when it was true but that is what it meant and wasn't an insult. Now we use the term mentally challenged instead but it is harder to remember for me than retard which some people really are. My great niece has down syndrome, she a year behind in school since she was 4 but we don't say retarded. We would never do anything to make her feel bad, she can't help the way she was born and we are proud of how hard she works to be her best.

I admit that I said "retarded" as an insult once, and the minute that I said it, I completely regretted it. I didn't mean as an insult to a disabled person; I was angry at one of my cousins, and I just let slip. I would never say it to a disabled person, but that doesn't make it any better.
I really regret ever saying it, and now, whenever I see someone picking on a disabled person, I make sure that I speak up for them.
I am truly sorry.

I did when I was a child and I didn't think of the cosequences it had on the other person. Now that I am more mature, no, I absolutely do not make fun of those with any type of disability. I so regret it! Yes, it is heartless. I am not perfect and those with disabilities did not choose to have that disability. I am sorry if anyone has been made fun of for their disability. However, those who make fun of people usually get theirs eventually. What goes around, comes around.

The only disability I make fun of is ignorance. I consider that a disability because someone who is autistic for example is not "retarded" to me, people who don't know what they're talking about are "retarded".

No, but I think lots of people look 'normal' but have minor imperfections. So lots of people aren't really 'normal' after all, and people with disabilities just have things that are visible.
That said, the only time I think somebody should be teased is if they call attention to their disability and demand sympathy or special treatment because of it.
Don't you respect people more if they work at doing their best to enjoy life regardless of any minor impairment?

Never! My BFF has a learning disability. People make fun of her all the time and sometimes I think I feel worse than her. It disgusts me whenever people call others retarded. It is a serious matter and not funny to make fun of people. I stand up for my BFF whenever I can and I am behind her all the way if she needs me.
The bottom line?
Making fun of people is never, ever, ever okay!!!!
Additional;
Who is normal? Everyone is abnormal, everyone is different and equal, even if they are blind, deaf, paralyzed, have a disease or learning disorder, or if they are perfectly healthy.

I think people make fun of other people because they 1. don't understand them and 2 because they are scared of what they do not know.
No, I have not made fun of people with a disability. I for one have one, and I work with the MR/DD. I get offended when I hear friends joking around and I always ask them to stop.
But keep in mind, people are made fun of every day. Not just people with disabilities, but people who are normal, typical. So is it fair for them to be made of too? No, it's not. But we are only human and we are not perfect and people make fun of things they do not understand.
And sometimes people make fun of other people to make themselves look better.

I have a disability but there was this one kid with Asperger's sydrome I made fun because of his inappropiate behavior and social problems. I did not know at the he had Asperger's so I felt bad and put that in perspective the next time he did something out of the ordinary.
