it seems contradictory for evolution to produce ego alongside intelligence. On the one hand its nice to ensure our short term dominance but will it be compatable with longterm human survival? In essence, will we sell ourselves out?

Great question.

Indeed we are suffering from a collective ego... that we are the most superior being... that we are the rulers of this earth... that we know to bend mother nature for our benefit. In other words, it is our superior intelligence that breeds and feeds our collective ego....... our ever increasing meddling with the nature can certainly end up in terminating our very existence over here on earth.... real intelligence lies in reining in our arrogant ego while trying to manipulate the nature for our immediate benefit which can have the potential of causing long term irreparable harm to our species.

What is the use of our superior intelligence if it can not give us the wisdom to adapt to mother nature rather than try bend it backwards in our arrogance as though we know it all??!!!

I believe intelligence becomes a danger if it is not tempered with the wisdom to rein in the ego. The more such intelligence, the risk would also be more accordingly.

Some people believe that the reason we haven't seen real UFOs is because most planetary civilizations destroy themselves before they develop interstella travel, (e.g. by nuclear holocaust or polution).

An alternate view is that our universe is a highly evolved (or engineered) system where each part has a purpose like parts of our bodies all work together in an integrated way.

The fact that our universe has so quickly developed intelligent life reminds me of the ability of baby horses and giraffes to walk shortly after birth.

We can compare our planet with an adolescent human. Teenagers tend to have big egos and take stupid risks. Teenagesr need to be stupid enough to have unprotected sex and babies, but smart enough to raise the new generation.

The question remains whether we will kill ourselves in a teenage mating ritual or continue to maturity.

Some animals have many kids to ensure some will survive. Our universe has many planets. Presumably not all need to survive, therefore there is no guarantees.

I think yes, in one way or another: either literally or figuratively speaking. Global warming, for instance, is a result of our ego. If we don't control our ego and keep on taking all those woods or animals, I think eventually we'll get what we deserve. However, we reap what we sow. There are a lot of other examples.

Maybe ego is a rational side-effect of intelligence. Unless we are robots, of course. But we are living being, and as a living being we always have desires. Desire become ego, and if we're not careful maybe ego will destroy our species.

Yes. The ego that has identified totally with the fiction it has built on the data gathered by the limited senses and fed on crass selfish motive is bound to destroy the Nature. However, the same ego and the mind that is turned inward, to the core of inner being, dissolve the selfish ego and instead finds the inner being is connected to all that exist in great love and succor and accordingly give up the petty ego to a larger, holistic and wholesome ego that includes world as a whole, a family, in its purview.
