First thing to do is not to take a manufacturing profession..
Take two gatherers like skinning and mining or Herbalism and just sell everything you gather...
(Don't take herbalism & mining - they won't show up on the minimap at the same time)
Then download Auctioneer - It comes with a little add-on called Bottomscanner that scans the AH for things that have been put on with a seriously low buy-out.. You can then buy the item and put it on for a more reasonable price and pocket the difference.

The double gather professions work well, but you can also farm for items and disenchant those you don't use or sell on the auction house.
Also, look to see if Red Whelplings are selling. You find those in the Marshlands, the drop rate is HORRIBLE, but they are worth a fortune in the Auction house.
I've also heard of a palyer who made a ton of money just playing the auction house, buying low and selling high he made several hundred gold in just a few weeks.

All depends on your level. But a general method is selling cloth on the Auction House (unless your a tailor ofcourse). At 70, daily quests are your best bet. You can get 56 gold in less than 90 minutes with dailies.

You can also farm primals in elemental platea at nagrand.
Priamls sell for around 20 gold each per priamal depending on the server. A stack of 20 primals is usually around 350-400 gold.

Take Mining and Skinning as professions until you're around level 70. Sell everything you gather and then skill up a crafting profession, preferably enchanting, and then sell your wares. Best money-makers in the game are the high-end enchants like Mongoose, Crusader, and Life-Stealing.
