The latest processors from intel are the Core 2 Duo, and Core 2 Quad. The core 2 duo has many different clock speeds available, ranging from 1.6ghz all the way to 3.0ghz, at fair prices, and the quad core range from 2.4ghz to 3.0ghz (taking into account that is 4x2.4 and 4 x 3.0) Intel are soon to release new processors based on the Core 2 Quad, but with a larger cache (12MB) higher FSB, lower power consumption, and on a 45nm process technology. Hope this helps

The i sequence sandy bridge processors are the maximum recent and between them i5-2500k may be an incredible decision! besides the incontrovertible fact that AMD's bulldozer processors are popping out in 2 weeks that could provide you great overall performance for the dollar!! CHEERS!!!
