Interesting question which was recently answered in a programme on TV. Per capita and per country resource unit (mineral wealth, land mass) Britain is one of the most successful countries in the world. This programme outlined the increased success that America would have if ruled by Britain PLC. The programme pointed to the the fact that with the mineral wealth, land area and population the States has, it is in fact not as efficient as it could be and if it used the same policies and approaches that the UK does, it would enter into the field of being a mega power. This maybe no more than jingoism by the programme makers, but the facts of the case were (and are) very compelling.

well, considering the ' wonderful' job England did with colonisation, and how the many countries who were colonised by England are totally grateful and happy to have an out dated monarchy and have not fought in any way to regain independence, and seeing how England did such a good job ruling Ireland, India and countless other areas of the world, it would seem you are on to something.... It is my understanding England and America are so into *** licking each other they are brother and sister anyway.....

Supposedly, our forefathers the original colonists, all British subjects, rebelled against the Crown(and therefore from the British standpoint were all traitors guilty of high treason) because they were against taxation without representation. As the British of the day pointed out, those taxes were helping to pay for the British troops stationed in America for the protection of those colonists. However, ¨no taxation without representation¨ in the British Parliament was seen by the rebellious American colonists as THE irrefutable justification for rising up in arms against the lawful government.
However, when the U.S. had its own colony in the Philippines at the beginning of the 20th century,it mercilessly taxed its own American citizens who lived and worked there and, yet ,did not allow them to vote for members of Congress or Senators. These taxed but unrepresented Americans took this all the way to the Supreme Court claiming that their government was taxing them without allowing them the right of all citizens to representation. The S.C. ruled that ¨No taxation without representation¨(our only officially stated reason for rebellion against Britain) was MERELY a PRE -constitutional right and therefore no longer a Constitutional right. The U.S. government reserved the right to tax its unrepresented citizens!
So,I ask,why the hell did we rebel against Britain in the first place? For a reason that wasn't even important enough to include in our Constitution!!!! ???

The fact that you had Tony Blair in office for so long suggests otherwise. Honestly, if I was to pick a European country for America to be ruled by, England would be on the bottom of that list. Not to say that America has a done a good job by electing Bush, but I just don't see having the English take over as being a real improvement.

hahaha what a joke!.
Hypothetically Tony Blair would have made a great leader of a combined UK USA administration. His type of politics suits the presidential system.. Right now there is no one else in the UK who would be capable of such a enormous job..

damn right, america has one of the most corrupt, idotic, arrogant and ignorant goverments in the world and has done for some time. you talk about Britain screwing things up in the past but Britain does have close ties with former colonies (the common wealthe) and most of the world hates america.

Perhaps you missed the little War for American Independance a couple centuries ago?
And the War of 1812 kinda solidified that.

thanks for the English bloak....
but America is fine....we built the finest system of government in the world....yes our president isn't very popular, but we avoid totalitarian rule with term limits and checks and balances....
India on the other hand....would probably be better off under English rule, they'd still have Myanmar, Pakistan and Bangladesh.....with that manpower, we'd be competing with China....
