The earth sciences. formation and destruction of land and the factors that affect it and looking at rocks in order to prove those ideas. minerals and fossils too are included in the study. Interesting subject I say.

Root of the word geology is Greek, it means to study the earth (geo = earth).
Generaly, it means the study of rock formations and mierals included within those rocks.

It is the study of rocks, how they form, interact, and reflect the history of the area in which they are found. Rocks meaning rocky substances, not just those laying around loose but also (and primarily) the layers found in digging in or looking at eroded areas of the earth (geo)

Geo means earth and logos means knowledge. So knowledge of earth (its formation, constituents, structure etc.)
