x = your no. of hours driving, x - 1 = your friend's
Your no. of hours driving:
58x + 53(x - 1) = 280
58x + 53x - 53 = 280
111x = 333
x = 3
Your friend's no. of hours driving:
= 3 - 1
= 2
Answer: You drove 3 hrs; your friend 2 hours.
Proof (distance traveled is 280 miles):
= (3 hrs * 58 mph) + (2 hours * 53 mph)
= 174 miles + 106 miles
= 280 miles

58 (x+1) + 53 (x) = 280
x being time your friend drove
x + 1 you drove an hour more than friend
58x + 58 + 53x = 280
sub 58 both sides
111x = 222
divide by 111
x = 2
friend drove 2 hours
you drove 3 hours

let y be the time taken by 'you'
we know :time=distance/speed
we got 2 equations now:
x/58=y (1)
280-x/53=y-1 (2)
by 1 we got :
x-58y=0
by 2 we got:
x+53y=333
subtracting 1 frm 2 we get:
111y=333
y=3
time travelled by 'you'=3 hrs
time travelled by ur frnd=y-1=3-1=2 hrs
