1914-18. Fought between the Allied Powers (normally termed France Russia and Britain at this time) and the Central Powers (Austro-Hungary and Germany, joined by Turkey). Ultimately responsible for the ending of many of the so-called absolute monarchies in Europe. In 1917 the Associated Power, America entered the war. They did not want the title of ally (one reason was president Wilson's insistance that the war be fought towards central principles which have been termed the 14 points and not a return to diplomacy run between empires and monarchies).

An enormous subject which I suggest you split up into a few topics you can tackle such as
a) the origins of the war

b) the fighting on the western front

a)
1st August 1914: Official outbreak as Germany declares war on Russia.
3rd August 1914: Germany declares war on France.
4th August 1914: Germany declares war on neutral Belgium and invades. This violates a treaty signed by Prussia respecting Belgian neutrality so Britain declares war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. President Woodrow Wilson declares American neutrality.

World War I is still known today as the Great War, even after WWII. It was also called the War to End All Wars, which of course it wasn't.
WWI started in 1914 and ended in 1918. The war was between what was called the Entente Powers, led by the UK, France, Russia and Italy from 1915 and the Central Powers led by Germany, the Austro-Hungarian empire and the Ottoman empire. As in WWII, many other colonies and countries around the globe were also involved in the war and also as in WWII, the United States only entered the war late, only in 1917. Russia withdrew from the war in 1917, when the communists won the Revolution.
WWI was especially known for the trenches along the Western front, where the soldiers were really nothing more than cannon fodder. It also saw the first air battles in the history of mankind and the first airforce pilots and casualties. The Eastern Front, the Middle Eastern Front and the Italian Front also saw heavy fighting and casualties. It was estimated that about 40 million people died during the war.
The end of the War saw the disintegration of the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires. Germany also lost all their colonies. The official Treaty of Versailles was only signed on 28 June 1919, after the war was officially ended on 11 November 1918 at 23h00, the so-called 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
The harsh terms which especially France insisted upon towards Germany, was one of the major causes of the 2nd WW.
I hope this helps, but you should really Google it. There's loads and loads of information about WWI on the internet, try also Wikipedia. Its such a convoluted history, it can't really be answered fully here on YA.

On 28th June, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated by the Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. On 6th July the German government gave its support for Austro-Hungarian reprisals against Serbia. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia and France began to mobilize its troops. This resulted in Germany declaring war on Russia (1st August) and France (3rd August). When the German Army entered Belgium on 4th August, Britain declared war on Germany.

Italy decided not to come to the aid of Germany and Austria-Hungary when war was declared in August, 1914. However, Turkey had signed a defensive alliance with Germany in July 1914 and two months later it joined the war against Britain, France and Russia.

"I'm not that great in school"

Yeah...I know. It shows. However by the looks of things you appear to have a great career ahead of you in the gas pumping business.
