I know the two words mean "stupid" and "black" in French, but there is more meaning to the expression than simply translating it directly.

'bete noire' can be translated as 'bugbear'. It is French for black beast and means something that really gets up your nose or annoys you....hence: bugbear.

bete noir means literally "black beast" it is an idiom in English for someone who is scorned or otherwise on the outs.
