I am a newly qualified teacher and have been doing some work at a school via an agency, covering for absent teachers. The agency now want to outsource their payroll to a company and charge me 4% of my earnings to cover the costs. Seems like a lot less work for them at MY cost. Can they do this? do I really have to agree to this if I want to stay with them.....Urgent advice needed please

I think you'll find that what they are doing is illegal. Your best bet is to contact the CAB and ask them.

What would you say is his fair rate ? The working man also wants holiday pay sick pay maternity pay redundancy pay may take the employer to a tribunal or put in a claim for personal injury. Agencies are there and used for many reasons. Employers have spent a lot of time money and effort in employing individuals, to which some employers think this is time wasted especially when the role may only be a temporary one. It makes sense to pay someone to do it for them. Legislation and the situation with illegal people trying to obtain work in the UK has scared a lot of small time employers (and large ones) as no company wants to be fined, so again the employment agency is an easier option as it does all the necessary work for them.

Have a look at the terms and conditions when you signed up with them. They are oblidged to have supplied those to you and I believe they are also oblidged to inform you about the percentage of any money they hold. Normally agencies take some commission from your salary, that is how they fund themselves. Is that 4% on top of their commission though?

Like Chris P said, speak to your local Citizens Advice Bureau, hope they can be of some use and if possible, get a job without the aid of an agency, they are bloodsuckers.

If you sign a contract allowing them to do this, yes they can. Why not, terminate your agency contract with this agency and go to another. There are plenty of agencies for the supply teachers who offer a better service with less cost to you. Check NUT web site.

Only if you agree to it.

Logically they will be outsourcing payroll to save costs, not to increase them. Why not throw that argument at them as see what excuse thay come up with. If it's a poor one, then go to another agency.

Spunds like you are with a pretty shadey agency, change to a more reputable one.
If you sign a contract allowing them to make a deduction from your salery, then yes they can. If you do not sign and they make a deduction other than normal income tax, NI contributions etc, then it is theft.

Only if you sign a disclaimer to say that you authorise it to take place. If they deducy monies from your salary without your written consent then this is classed as theft.

Think your better off changing agencies.
