Such a question presuppose that ALL the world's people are selfish but the very idea of selfishness is a construction of individualistic cultures. Not all cultures are individualistic, some are collectivist. However, those that are individualistic, especially those driven by a capitalist ideology are surely selfish. It is the selfishness itself that drives the economy.

Given Charles Darvin's theory of evolution, it shall be the survuvakl of the fittest among all offsprings. The struggle for existence is also a struggle for existence of space food and ither things. Thus it becomes a struggle against others, own brothern in fact. This struggle against others can not be carried out without being selfish, self interested and egoistic. The very fact that we exist today presuppose such many struggles done by our fore fathers, and we are the present day result, and this struggle goes on; and one keep becoming increasingly selfish.

Another way of looking at this is through the influence of materialistic philosophy. Materialistic inclinatino of man is bound to make him selfish; and in a materialistic society with scientific and technological overtone, religion goes behind the screen and people become more selfish, and there is nothing that stops them especiall with religion beoming powerless.

Not everyone is the way Jeff described it, he just uses it to justify his own personal selfishness. Most people have become self centered ***-wholes, and never think for a second what it would be like to walk in another's shoes. People are very simplistic and do not think outside the box. That is the reason a lot (not even close to all) people are selfish.

Its not in human nature, although some people would like to think so. A lot of the selfishness we see today is a product of capitalism.

I hope my 18 years of this world will be of help to you.

People are insecure.
The mind can do allot to person when a situation occurs.
For example.
a horrible incident occurs. Fear, confused, or even the needed knowledge is so overwhelming the only choice one can do is blocked it out from the mind.
The negative sides will say.
"HEY WHO CARES! THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU!"
"WELL NO ONE EVER CARED ABOUT YOU"
"I'M BETTER AND THAT'S THE END OF IT"

It's like persuading a child to eat good vegetables, the child will not budge to eat because it's not satisfying, its not craving, it won't be fun.
When in the end, all of those good vitamins will nourish the body.

Basically we see that getting angry, being selfish, slash out hate
is much easier
Giving love and compassion, a little bit of their own time.
Why because its draining, and they would later question their reward. AS IF NEEDED.

This would typically give someone to take an easier path.
Think of oneself.

In reality, no one will think of them in return, unless one who does not follow the path is present.

Have a great day.

People does'nt have satisfaction, some of the characteristics of a selfish man are conceited, greedy, egoistic, proud, inconsiderate, rude, wicked and so on. People love the world thats why they want everything under the sun. They are not contented of what they have and sadly they do not even thank God for all the blessings given to them. They think that if they have the material things in the world they would be happy but the truth is they are not.

Once again, another sweeping generalization is made.
There are many people who are extremely generous.

Culturally speaking, capitalist societies are based on the concept of personal gain as an incentive to be more productive. On an individual basis, people can allow their lust for personal gain consume their judgement. A strong foundation of morals and values is what is lacking that allows greed and hordism to seem so predominant. It's the old 'keeping up with the Jones's" situation. People have the notion that they must have more than anyone around them to feel that they are successful.

The word "selfish" is not correct to use. I know what you are trying to say. Use the different word and you can understand better about what is going around. Why is everyone trying to survive? Going back to early times everyone had to fight to save him/herself or to SURVIVE. That is all we are doing. It is jungle out there and you will have to learn to survive. And for that you may have to remove any obstacles or make your way through bushes by pushing or killing other animals etc etc. Watch the movie, "Apocalypto" by Mel Gibson. You may understand this point of view.

It is the basic nature on people to be selfish.Everybody wants to be happy always, without understanding what happiness is.Man wants to lead a leisure life.,easy going, without responsibility, not answerable to anybody, grab all comforts for himself only,no mind to share with the needy or others what he is having in excess in his possession. He is confident that he is going to enjoy all benefits for himself,, that too for ever not knowing when the end will knock at his door.
Mostly such people will give more work for their brain rather than to their (physical) work.
Perhaps only calamity can unite all the people and make them to shed selfishness.

Peoples r not selfish if they give priority to secure their most luved ones...

Again..if person is able enough to save somebody else from trouble..bt he doesnt...he's "BRUTAL" not selfish...

The Term selfish can be used when Believing or teaching that the chief motives of human action are derived from gratifying one's own pleasure...in such cases..the person himself doesnt realise that he's becoming selfish...its in his gene and nature...

I find it interesting, if incomprehensible, that you qualified by saying "the world's people"; I assume as opposed to people who are not of this world.

Selfishness is a survival tool, but when carried to an extreme it just makes one immoral and obnoxious.
