I'm 13 and really need help with my acting career.
I was planning to join this acting class called Young Actors Space, rehearse there for a couple of months.
But I called in to a couple of agencies and they said I need a reference in order for a proper audition.
I asked what a reference was and they said someone had to call in and say, "I found somebody thats great for your agency..."
But who is supposed to do that?
I wanted Young Actors Space to call in.
Would that be a good plan?

Attend the classes and talk to other actors and your teachers. If any of them are signed with that agency or know any one there, they could be your reference.

You should know that a couple of months is not nearly enough training and that even the most seasoned professional still go to class and get coached on their current scripts. Keep going to class. If you find that after a couple of months YAS is not working for you, find another place.

If I'm right in my guess here and you're a young actor in LA, here's a whole list (2 pages) of places to try. http://www.workingactors.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?g=Training%2FCHILDREN_S_TRAINING%2F&d=1

Make up a list of questions you have (what classes do you have for my age group, what days and times are they, who are the instructors, what are their qualifications and credits, what degree did they earn & where did they earn their degree, how long have they been with you, where did they teach before, what are the fees, etc.) The questions are up to you, but make a list, make several copies and start calling. Write the name of each place on top, write the name of the person you spoke to, then write all the answers down so you can compare them later. One good question to ask is if you can audit (try) a class for free so you can see if this would be a good place for you before you make a commitment to pay a lot of money for several weeks of classes. Some will, some won't but you could get several free classes and sample many different studios and hopefully find the right place for you.

Another place to look for classes would be the ads in the trade papers like Backstage West. Just make sure you and your parents have that list of questions to ask before you call!

good luck!

They are looking for a referral from an industry person or close friend they know and trust. This is common.

Young Actors Space seems interesting. If covers some of the ground we covered in college. Except college was cheaper and my acting improve instructor had an MFA from Pasadena Playhouse.

Yes, do go to your acting coaches, Talk to them about it and see what they think and what they can do for you.
Also do you do Drama in High School? Because even talk to your drama teacher and ask if they could reference you.
Also make sure these Agencies are legit, you don't want to get scammed.

I think you can ask the acting coaches in your class. If they are not authorized to call, (which I believe they are) at least they can point you to the right direction.
