Everytime I watch the news or some American talk show a comment such as 'we are Americans how can this happen to us' is said.. or something along those lines.. What is so special about Americans? The rest of the world (may be a surprise to some) are human as well.

I think it is a stereotype of the true American spirit. We learn that the French are rude and hate Americans, the British are snobs, the South Africans all condone apartheid...............but if we are intelligent human beings we realize that these types of generalizations only make for anger and separate us from our brothers and sisters who happen to be born in other places just as special and unique to them as America seems to us.
I am a 4th generation American. All of my great grandparents were born in other countries- Norway, Ireland and Italy. So do not count me as an American that looks down on other countries people, but rather as a proud American that welcomes the chance to learn about what is special about who you are as well as where you live.
How else will we ever learn to become one planet and celebrate our differences as well as what makes us the same under our skins?

The media has really sunk to low places in the past couple of decades. It has become a machine. I am sure the people who are on the talk shows are trying to gain browny points from their audiences. Depending on what time of day the show is on will determine how much "red, white and blue" rhetoric will be on.
I think just because talk show people like to dramatize events, they say things like "how could this happen in America" because it feeds the drama. It doesn't mean it is true that it doesn't happen in America it just gives the host an opportunity to create some drama.
All this really is nothing against people in other countries.

Why are other countries so consumed with Americans is my question? Y/A has millions of these types of questions it seems.
I believe all people have hometown or country spirit no matter where they are from.
I think that other countries watch too much tv if they are basing their judgements of Americans on what they view on the tube since we're not all like that.
Television, even the news, is made to gain ratings. It's made to entertain, so it's not an ideal way to view a whole country.

I hate to make generalizations but here is my 2 cents: Lack of emphasis in school about other nations as far as history and geography and the proximity to others location wise. America is one giant self sufficient large and wealthy nation separated from the rest of the world. (Canada does not count because they are similar in culture and traditions).
Edit: since we are making generalizations I must say that Americans are also the most kind, honest and hard working people ever. Let's not dwell on the negatives

It seems silly to me because there is nothing called American to me ! They are people from all over the world . Short history and empty culture are nothing much to be proud about !
But don't forget the media affect in people's life there and movies and lots of other political interests to make Americans think about themselves the way they do now !
Anyways people just started to realize how silly cowboy movies are ha ha ha...........

Don't you feel some special affinity for whatever group you belong to? That's how people feel about their country or tribe or family. Americans just happen to have a lot of cameras turned on themselves.

Well ... I'd love myself no matter where I was from. Shock from being hurt by a situation I didn't expect doesn't have much to do with being American.

Um America is basically the mixing pot for all races and religions. How can I be an Irish-Greek-German-Morman? Its not like we are just one rich "super" ego race, we are just like you. And like you, we support our countries and troops.

i dont know they sometimes are ego-centric without looking at other people or maybe they felt that they are being hated by other countries thats why they love themselves because they think no one cares and loves them but themselves!
