While the government (obviously the Federal, but this holds true to states and local governments generally) cannot deprive you of property without reimbursing you a "fair price". Recently, there was a controversial court decision that the local government (a Connecticut city) could turn around and sell the property so obtained to a private concern, and many states have passed laws that prevent that from happening.
