I would suggest that you do a search on the solitary eclectic Witch, and there should be reference to self-initiation..
There would be thousands of such rituals available bot in books and on the net...
Most solitary Witches make up their own rituals and spells as that is just part of joy of being Wiccan, we do what feels right to us at the time...
A ritual can be as simple as looking in the mirror and saying 3 times, I am a Witch, but there are years of study before you should do this, 3 years and 3 days to be precise..
Blessed Be... )O(

If your book is centered in the 16th century, your protagonists could be a Herbalist or a Dowser and find the local Christian clergy naming them a Witch
and calling for their hanging.

I doubt even the clergy prays.

I'm not a Witch, but I have been called a Witch and told I will go to hell by Christians on YA. So things have not changed all that much.

Not usually, no. Witchcraft is a technique, like prayer itself. You become a witch through practice, the same way you become a carpenter or a piano player.

In Wicca (one of the religions in which witchcraft is often practiced), there are initiatory rituals to mark one's formal entrance into the religion or one's dedication to the path. However, these rituals are usually either oathbound or very personal, and not usually the sort of stuff that the Wiccan in question would divulge just to satisfy someone's curiousity.

In my tradition, one must be initiated by a witch to become a witch. There are a few requirements.

1. One can only be initiated by someone of the oposite gender.

2. It must be a blood relative OR someone with whom you have had intercourse.

3. the initiation takes place in a cemetery/burial ground and must be witness by at least 2 other initiates.

4. The initiation is conducted in the nude for 3 consecutive nights leading up to the new moon.

5. There are certain things which are said to invoke spirits and certain things done to seal the pact.

After the first 2 nights, the initiate can change his or her mind, but after the 3rd time, there is no turning back.

hmmm so virtually your prayer used to be directed at "the sizzling women" at your tuition? What approximately a common prayer for the unsaved for your magnificence, adding men and ordinary watching women? Not to say that no longer as soon as in the course of your assertion did you thank or recognize God for what he has performed. You claimed pridefully that it used to be YOUR prayer that despatched those humans to God. Hmmmm this reeks of self serving boastfulness, congrats now you have got your title in print. (incidentally I'm no longer even christian and this made me queasy)
