That depends... Of his color films 'Rear Window' is the best by far. It is one of only two films I've ever seen where I felt true suspense while watching it and how can you go wrong with Grace Kelly to look at?
Of his B&W stuff I'd go with 'Notorious' or 'Rope'. 'Rope' has a more interesting premise but 'Notorious' is just SO cool and it has the longest screen kiss in history, considering whose kissing who that is not a bad thing.

Of course, Vertigo - the romance, the mystery, the obsession, the murder, the suspense, and finally that amazing ending.

Rebecca
This one isn't well-known but works as both a romance and a horror story. It just drips with atmosphere and ambience.
