For those of you that don't own a vehicle, how do you commute from TSU to Austin or from UTA to San Marcos?

For example, I want to live in Austin while attending TSU but I don't know how to work around transportation issues. I know that a rail system will be opening up soon but it will be a while. Help?

Everyone I know has their own vehicle or car pools. No word on the rail system. I have no idea what rail system you're referring to but if I were you I wouldn't depend on one being built. it's a 30 minute drive by the way.

The only rail service between Austin and San Marcos is Amtrack. This service could not be used as you envision. It leaves San Marcos at 8:32 am and arrives in Austin at 9:31 am daily. The return service leaves Austin at 7:10pm and arrives in San Marcos at 7:52pm daily. These times are ideal of course. The Texas Eagle service is known to be anywhere from on time to 4 hours off schedule. It would cost $22-24 per day to use this service.

You could try the bus service but it would cost $20.00 per day and limit your options as to travel times to 4 times from Austin to San Marcos and 3 from San Marcos back.

You might want to look into trying to see if there is someone who wants to share a ride, though I would think that living in San Marcos would be the better idea.

Incidentally, if you are going to live in Austin, UTA is University of Texas at Arlington. University of Texas in Austin is referred to simply as UT.

The only rail system I have heard mentioned was a triangle high speed system with stops only in San Antonio, Austin, DFW, and Houston. Small towns would be served by buses or other means.

Ive heard something about a rail system connecting San Antonio and Austin, but I was told that was 20+ years off.

I would live in San Marcos if you dont have a car. Its a great little city...not to mention much cheaper than Austin

with traffic being what it is, you would be crazy to live in one town and go to school in the other. but if you enjoy wasting time and gas, go for it. and if there is a rail system, it sure isnt going to reach to san marcos. it would most likely be light rail with in austin. maybe attend the community college in austin to get the basics and then transfer to UT, all the while living in austin.
