let x be the number of pins sold by the chess club. since computer clubs sells 134 pins and the number of pins sold by the computer club is 50 more than 3 times the number of the chess club, then you will get the equation:
134=50+3x, to get the equation, transpose the constant in the other side:
134-50=3x, then divide both sides by 3:
x=(134-50)/3

The chess club sold 28 pins

let the number of pins sold by chess club = x

the number of pins sold by computer club = 3x+50

so 3x + 50 = 134

3x = 134-50

3x = 84

x = 84/3 = 28
