Only once did I witness a tornado. My parent's place was only a 10 minute drive of where the tornado touched down, so I guess I saw the overall making of it though. I had endless nightmares shortly after, but the fear has now faded away. Mother Nature doesn't pick or choose... it's all about luck, but a lot of people didn't get any luck during that fateful night.

Both, yes. I live in Iowa, those things happen here. The worst one here was when I was 13. My mom and I were on the way home from somewhere and the weather was turning bad. We just made it into the garage, with the electric garage door opener, got the door down and within seconds the power went out. I opened the walk thru door and tried to run from the garage to the house but the wind was blowing so hard I couldn't even get out the door. It took both of us to push the door closed again, so we waited it out in the garage, finally managed to make it into the house, on the way noticing that our tree was laying across the whole yard. That tornado made a mess of my town! It was a scary experience, to say the least.

Both. I drove through one. I wasn't directly in the tornado, but very very very close. We were driving in southern Illinois and the guy on the radio had JUST said "Tornadoes are coming out of the sky like popcorn. We have a tornado touching down in Dix, IL." Low and behold... there they are: a sign that says "Dix: 1 mile" and the tornado itself. We can only see it for a brief seconds at a time as the windshield wipers clear the view, but the car was shaking and vibrating like inside of a vacuum cleaner. My wife started crying, and I tried to remain calm, but the "little girl" inside my head was screaming like... well, a little girl.
Long story short... it passed, and we survived without a dent in the fender.
