Grand Opera, as cited above, has such tragedies as Beethoven's Fidelio, Gounod's Faust and Wagner's Tannhausen.

In addition, Mark Blitzstein expressed his radical Brechtian view of the world in such pieces as The Cradle Will Rock and translations of the Threepenny Opera and Mother Courage.

Kurt Weill, who composed the Threepenny Opera, also composed Street Scene, to a libretto by Elmer Rice and the Rise and Fall of the City of Mahoganny.

Finally, most great musicals are actually dramas, not tragedies or comedies. As noted elsewhere, they have elements of both. Joey in Pal Joey is a heel who gets his comeuppance when through sheer selfishness he blows his shot at the big time. Julie from Showboat and Tony and Maria from West Side Story are tragic figures.

Comedy gets billing because it can be an easy sell but there is a rich heritage out there, including musicals which are tragedies.

Musical Comedy is always on the edge of tragedy. Think about, West Side Story, Oklahoma, Showboat. They all tip into tragedy at some part of the show.

Truthfully, I would doubt anyone would show up for a musical tragedy. In fact, two of the three shows I've mentioned were advertised as Musicals, without any adjective.
