I'd make that 150 to 400 years ago, and I'd say that the biggest problem the Europeans faced in recent times was the need to establish coaling stations for their steam ships. You can't colonize without trade, and you'll need a navy to protect the trade routes from piracy.

(Later, they switched from coal to oil. And that has been a problem ever since...)

I think you mean 400 to 500 years ago. Columbus sailed to America in 1492, and Jan van Riebeeck came to the Cape in South Africa in 1652, and he was not the first one there. Vasco Da Gama rounded the Cape in 1497.

Hostile native inhabitants, difficulty in communicating with the native inhabitants, diseases, no knowledge of the flora and fauna, problems with growing food and veg, water supplies, building materials, transport (animals to pull and carts which first had to be built), wild animals especially at night, no knowledge of the weather patterns in terms of planting of crops and how and where to build shelters. Lack of all other household things that we nowadays take for granted like candles, oil, flour, sugar, salt. There was no infrastructure. Roads and harbours and such were not yet built. And problems with clothing.

"Ignorance". Yes, ignorance of other people's cultures, languages and religions. That is why there were so many wars, so much suffering, so much misunderstanding and so much hate. All the other difficulties could have been overcome, if only there would have been "good will ", tolerance and wisdom on either side.
