Does anyone know/have you..eliminate previous windows updates from their system. These updates takes up your hard drive. My computer is set for automatically updates but I don't know which one to get rid of. When I reviewed my add/remove programs listing, I noticed there are enormous files since July 2007.

If some one have done this, which one you get rid of or I just write MS for this answer.

well if you download updates and patches it actually replace old files and also remove all the back up and temp files after the installation. You dont have to remove any of your updates as ur automatic updater will download it again the one you uninstall.

As far as taking space, updates and patches generally doesnt take a lot of space. dot net framework 1 and 2 normally takes time and acquire space but you need it for day to day use. If you are so much concerned about your space i suggest do a disk clean up and remove the junk files from your system.

Hope this answers your question

You can uninstall many updates through the Control Panel -> Add & Remove Program Options, but you shouldn't and here is why:

Updates are pieces of code that fill holes in your Operating System (Microsoft Windows). Those holes allow hackers to get into your system and potentially steal your data or control/slow down your computer.

If you are that concerned about updates taking space up on your hard drive it might be time to get another hard drive.

You need them all. Don't delete. Most of them are critical security updates.

Windows has more security holes than a ton of Swiss cheese and removing these updates (patches) for them will put your computer at a large risk of malicious attack.

BTW, I have over 120 Microsoft and Windows updates and I wouldn't dream of deleting any of them. If you need more hard drive space, I would suggest adding a second hard drive. Hard drives are dirt cheap these days and can be installed with just a screwdriver.

Good luck.

I wouldn't recommend getting rid of the updates themselves, but you CAN get rid of all of the folders in the Windows folder that are titled "$NTUninstall....." These folders only hold the installation routines for all the updates. You can also get rid of all the text files that are titled "KBmmmmmm.log" as they are the log files for the installs for the updates.

Doing this can free up quite a bit of space on your hard drive. And yes, this is SOP where I work.

NEVER delete old updates they are different from new updates and removing them makes you vulnerable and your system unstable as newer updates depend on them being on your computer, I'm sure you can free space another way or invest in a bigger hard drive

Dell ahs told me to only download the Service Pack 2 updates. Some of them are really important.

Each update is completely different, so don't delete any of them.
