I didnt tear as such, just stretched and bruised. Unfortunately I washed myself with mild shower gel the day after ( i had had an epidural to remove my placenta so I didnt feel any pain at the time) and I dont know whether that has aggravated the bruised, stretched area. Currently I have to pee in the shower to help with the pain.
1) Did I aggravate the problem or is it normal to feel pain when peeing after giving birth?
2) WHat should I use to CLEAN down there?
3) And is there anything I can buy to SOOTHE the pain?
Thanks
(PS - please dont lecture me about using shower gel - i didnt realise a bruise would become painful. I usually use shower gel down there with no problems at all)

Hi all, thanks these are helpful answers. Just to clarify, my urethra ISNT hurting when I pee, so I dont think its a urinary tract infection. The pain is sort of on the upper right hand side of my vagina, presumably where the vagina stretched a little when pushing baby out.

Hi ALma thanks for your answer. i definitely didnt have any stitches, i was totally conscious throughout the whole labour. My midwife was very good. When I discovered the bruise/ stretch the next morning I asked a midwife to double check whether I had torn or not and whehter i needed stitches and she confirmed there was no tear there and i didnt need stitches. Like another answerer said, there were probably some superficial lacerations down there, but no tears.

Hi Boogies... the pain isnt anywhere around the urethra, its at the side. It only hurts when I pee and the urine touches the lacerations. If i manage to pee without any pee running onto the lacerations, i have no pain at all

1) you may not have aggravated it (so don't beat yourself up about it), these things CAN just happen. it's not normal, but can happen. remember, you have just given birth. you ARE vulnerable to all sorts. - it *might* even be just a simple bladder infection!
2) warm water at first, then after the second day of just water, try using a mild soap. don't go expensive soaps. just plain mild soaps will do.
3) ask your midwife/nurses about Xylocaine Jelly.
see if this is right for you. basically, this is a controlled anaesthetic. failing that, try bonjela. it's not only for babies gums!!
hope this helps and congrats on your new bubba! :)

1)Don't worry is perfectly normal after you have a vaginal delivery to feel pain when you pee for a few days.
2) I used to wash my self with warm water instead of using toilet paper every time I needed to pee, I know is not very comfortable and it can be a little messy but it was just painful to use the paper and I did want to clean myself properly to prevent infections.
3)unfortunately I don't know anything to soothe the pain but you'll see it will end soon, it only lasts about a week or so.
I know that you think that you didn't tear yourself, it wasn't probably much but if you're feeling pain is because you did, you actually got some stitches I know that when you get the epidural you don't feel anything but ask you doctor and you'll see that you got at least 2 stitches.
and to clean when you're showering I would use whatever you usually use, just do it carefully and gently, I don't think that has nothing to do with the pain you get when you pee, and after you finished showering you can buy at the drug store something to prevent infections, they have them where you can find the band aids and stuff like that.

You probably have some small lacerations down there, a watermelon wouldnt go through a key hole with out break a little bit of something after all! After I had my daughter they gave me this bottle to clean with after I went pee... you can mix in like a DROP of benadine to 1 hole bottle of water and it will clean it. As far as in the shower... technically your not even supposed to clean with shower gel in the nether-regions anytime, so I would say just clean with the bedadine and water... dermaplast will help numb it and it is also an antiseptic and will clean it as well as it needs to be cleaned. Also another thing that may be happening is your urethra is BRUISED... that happened to me.
P.S. If for some reason the hospital didnt give you the bottle to clean with you can go to walgreens and get them. It looks like about the size of a ketchup bottle at a restaurant (I am know I am lacking of better terms lol) and it has a top that pulls up like what would be on a gatorade bottle or something. Dermaplast you can find at walmart or walgreens and its in an aresol can with a red or blue cap. Congratulations btw!

You could have a urinary tract infection. The hospital should have sent you home with a sitz bath and a water bottle. You need to take the water bottle and squirt water onto your vagina each time you use the bathroom. The shower gel should not have anything to do with it other than you may have let some bacteria in. I would let the doctor know so they can test you for infection and go from there.

You need to buy a "peri bottle" from the drugstore (usually they give you one in the hospital) and just fill it with warm water before you pee and spray it on your sore bits as you pee. This will stop the urine from stinging. A bit of baking soda in the water can help even more if plain water doesn't help (baking soda is alkaline, urine is acidic)
You can also put a mild soap solution in it to clean, but I wouldn't. Just plain water should keep you clean if you are using it every time you go to the bathroom.

Sometimes it is quite normal to feel pain and discomfort down there especially after giving birth 3 days ago. Instead of using soap I would just lukewarm water to rinse for now until you start feeling better. If it gets worse after a couple more days then I would see your doctor.

put a pad in the freezer for a couple of hours before you need one and it should help with the pain.
