i can have a large brekky at 9 and started growling at 11. full lunch at 12 and hungry again at 2. a few toasts afterwards, im hungry again at 4. so hungry that if i dont eat my limbs feel weak.

and i have particular cravings for spicy and sour food, and cold drinks? is this normal or is it just me... it doesnt pose any difficulty or health issue to me since i love eating, but i would just like to know...

any other day, i can have one meal a day and not feel hungry

any medical explanation?

lol not medical explanation, i mean scientific explanation of how the activities in the uterus result in craving for food. i know its normal to feel hungry on period, but my food intake is way TOO much compared to usual consumption. like 7 meals a day, three or four are LARGE full diets

thanks simply me - i know of the no-nos too but cant help it.

I'm the same way --- except, my most favorite indulgent is chocolate with peanuts mixed with ice cream, and I like salt & tomatoes (weird, yes). I absolutely can not stand McDonald's or any other fatty, greasy foods during my cycle.

There are also those days, that you've said you experience, when I have no taste for food - when that happens (with me) it's because I feel too bloated and crampy and unhappy.. I want nothing to do with food because I don't want to feel as if I'm adding to the bloating of the stomach.

I guess, for the most part, you could blame the hunger thrust due to the hormones.

Anyway, back to your question. Yes, there is most definitely a medical reasoning behind this.

* The hypothalamus is a gland in the brain responsible for regulating the body's thirst, hunger, sleep patterns, libido and endocrine functions. [link 1]

{{Hunger, no matter what symptoms you may be going through, can be caused by lack of vitamins & nutrition. Are you getting enough fiber in your diet? Enough fruits & vegetables?))

I love to eat and eat until my stomach feels it may burst.. Then I regret it afterwards.. Maybe you should meet/talk with a nutritionalist or physicial.. There could be more than just the hunger factor weighing in on this problem!

It's probably caused by hormonal changes that occur during your period. The blood-loss theory from a previous answerer sounds plausible, too.

Yep, your body actually uses more calories during your period so we have an excuse to eat more/higher calorie foods for 5 days a month!!!

There is NO evidence at all to suggest that women shouldn't have spicy food during their period - how do you think Thai, Korean and Indian women cope?????? Your senses are affected by your hormones so you certainly may feel like spicy/sour foods (similar to pregnancy cravings) or you may find some smells unpleasant during your period.

Eat what makes you feel good, avoid salty food if you are prone to bloating and don't feel guilty about the odd binge on chocolate or toast because your body will be using up those calories anyway!

lol, Jessica I can't go food shopping on my period either - I come home with a trolley full of biscuits, snacks, chocolate, instant noodles, stuff I would NEVER eat otherwise!!!

Medical Explanation::::: You're on your period!
I do this too. I have to make sure that NO ONE goes grocery shopping when im on my period. I would probably eat everything if they did! So dont worry, its perfectly normal.

your probably just hungry from the blood loss which makes you weak so you need to eat more

unfortunately, spicy and sour foods are exactly what youre supposed to aviod during your period - cold drinks as well. they say no cold beverages or lemons (specifically) but anything spicy sour or cold in general. i think they can cause pain, cramps, and other complications. sorry to ruin your mood but those are definitely things you make sure NOT to have during your period. i dont know about a medical explanation though - sorry.

Don't ask me; I'm just a man. I never will understand women. But I love 'em just the same!
