I've found a master's program that greatly interests me, I e-mailed the director to ask how to apply and he sent me a link, said it was very competative and wished me the best. would it be wrong to ask him for advice in the application process? if no then how should I go about it?

It probably wasn't fatal, but if you bothered him for information you could have gotten on their website, it could cause him to think that you aren't very resourceful. "How to apply" is usually pretty clear. He also needs to be unbiased because he is responsible for admissions, so he isn't going to give you any secret tips that aren't available to everyone. Now leave him alone and apply according to the process set out by the university.
