I recommend the PS2 also. It is outdated, with few newer titles being released because of the PS3, but there is such a huge variety of games for the PS2 you will be busy playing for a LONG time. And you can find used PS2 games really cheap. I still play my PS2 all the time. (The PS3 is outrageously expensive, I'm waiting for the price to go down a bit before buying.)

Also, if you need any help picking out some great games, feel free to ask me. I have an email link in my profile, just let me know the genre of games you like and I'll steer you in the right direction!

A PS2 would be probably the best thing for you. It's still cheap, but very few people have been investing in PS3s so you've got at least another year or so of new games for it. I wouldn't call them outdated, but they will be soon. That said, you can probably pick up tons of used games pretty cheap for them, once the PS3 becomes worthwhile and people start buying them in earnest.

You might also try getting a Wii. It's a bit more expensive, but it's a lot more interactive, it's new (so it'll have new games for at least another 3-5 years) it's still pretty cheap, and the control scheme is designed so new console gamers can pick one up and play it. The only problem you might have is actually getting one; I'm not sure how easy they are to find.

I hear ya, man! I know what it's like to want a nice gaming system than isn't outrageously priced.

If I were you, I would go with a PS2 as it has a huge library of great games and is backward compatable with most PS1 games. It also makes a nice DVD player.

If you get one just make sure that you keep it in a dust-free area and get a good lens cleaner because PS2 systems have picky lenses when it comes to non-DVD formatted games.

Most of the newer games for it are on a DVD disc but, the older ones that are not on DVD discs as well as the PS1 games may not play if your lens isn't perfectly clean.

Also, you can get a used GameCube at EB Games/Game Stop for about 50 dollars and some kind of special warranty in case it quits on you.

Good luck.

The PS2 is a good idea. It might be going out of date, but has a massive amout of great gaming to back it up. Since most of the games are older, they'll be cheaper as well. Games are still being released for it, if slowly, and you'll be able to pick from a wide array of games, since the system has 6+ years of gaming titles.

I'd reccomend a site like gamespot to help you jump start a search for games. You might not want to buy a console until you check out the kind of games that are avalible, esp. if you're going to be investing in a system.
